(More customer reviews)I started using the Hugo Naturals Vanilla and Sweet Orange shampoo and conditioner about two months ago. I was hoping that the less irritating detergent/surfactant (decyl glucoside instead of sulfates) as well as the other natural ingredients would help me with my persistent dandruff. What I noticed right away was that I was shedding a lot less hair in the shower, and that continues to be the case. That was nice! I also like the pleasant but subtle smell. But it didn't help with the dandruff. After a month, I continued using the vanilla and sweet orange shampoo, but switched to the Hugo Naturals French Lavender conditioner, which is supposed to help with dandruff. I noticed it helps a lot. I still notice a few flakes when I comb out my wet hair, but notice hardly any during the course of the day. And when I switch back to the vanilla orange conditioner (like when I travel, since that's what I had filled up my travel bottle with) or go a couple days without washing my hair, I notice the problem get worse again. So I think the French Lavender is definitely helping, though it hasn't completely fixed the problem. I like the lavender scent even more than the vanilla orange.
A few other notes: The shampoo took a little getting used to. A little goes a long way -- I've only used half a bottle in two months. It takes a minute to really lather up, but then produces tons of lather. It's kind of hard to work my fingers through my hair with this lather, and afterward my hair feels dry -- it's out of the question to shampoo without conditioning right afterward. Meanwhile, the conditioner (both vanilla orange and lavender) is really thick, hard to get out of the bottle, and sometimes I felt like I was only smearing it on the surface of my hair rather than being able to work it right through the layers. I diluted the conditioner about 1:1 with water, and that fixed both problems. It's easy to work through my hair and it still feels thick and creamy. Plus diluting helps the conditioner last longer, which is good because it's expensive and I go through the conditioner (even diluted) almost four times faster than the shampoo.
I'm happy with how my hair feels and looks with this shampoo and either kind of conditioner. It feels clean and manageable, and not very slippery -- more textured, with lots of body. (My hair is thin and wavy) My hair feels a little dry, but that might be because it's winter (I'm hoping that's why the dandruff problem hasn't completely gone away too) and it's nice that my hair definitely doesn't feel greasy at all. It might be a good idea to deep condition once a week or so.
